Are Drones the Next Step for Medical Deliveries?

The speed with which a medical delivery takes place can mean the difference between life and death for an individual. That’s why efficient medical deliveries are so critical. In recent years, unmanned aerial vehicles—or drones—have shown enormous potential in increasing the speed and efficiency of medical deliveries. Here’s what you need to know about this promising development.

The government is encouraging commercial drone use.

Last October, the U.S. Department of Transportation updated its rules regarding commercial use of drones, making it possible to use drones for several different purposes. In particular, research can now begin on the best ways to use drones for medical purposes. The first goal is to make it possible for drones to safely deliver medical supplies and blood within the United States.

Drones are already being used for medical deliveries in other countries.

The rest of the world is already beginning to use drones to make medical deliveries. The U.S. medical product delivery company Zipline has been delivering medical supplies via drone in Rwanda since 2016, and it began deliveries in Ghana earlier this year. Zipline is currently making plans to begin medical deliveries using drones in the United States, beginning in Nevada.

Drone deliveries are particularly useful for rural areas.

Residents of rural parts of the United States may have more trouble obtaining the medical supplies they need, both because so many rural hospitals have closed and because it takes time to deliver those supplies. By speeding up delivery of blood for emergency transfusions, for example, drone deliveries have the potential to save lives.
