How to Do Pallet Packing Correctly

Preparing pallets for shipping is a task that seems deceptively simple. After all, how hard can it be to stack boxes on a pallet? Yet, many shippers made simple mistakes that can affect the security of the shipment. To properly prepare your pallets for shipping, follow these steps.

Pack individual cartons or boxes properly.

Proper pallet packing starts with packing the cartons or boxes securely. If you leave too much space between the items, they will shift around and could sustain damage during the transport. Don’t use a larger box or carton when a smaller one will do. Any excess space between the items should be filled with packing peanuts or a similar filler material.

Select the right pallets.

Shippers often reuse the same old pallets over and over again. This can be a mistake that causes damage to a shipment. Before reusing an old pallet, inspect every inch to ensure that no boards are damaged or loose and no nail heads are protruding.

Stack the cartons or boxes properly.

One of the most important rules in pallet packing is to always place the heaviest cartons and boxes at the bottom of the pallet. You’ll also need to distribute the weight as evenly as possible. For example, if you have only two very heavy boxes, with the rest of the goods being lightweight, place the heaviest boxes at opposite ends of the pallet.

Use an adequate amount of stretch wrap.

It’s best to use a stretch wrap machine to avoid mistakes in this step. However, if you are manually wrapping each handling unit, you should be sure to use enough stretch wrap. Wrap each unit at least five times. On every other rotation, twist the wrap so that the strength and durability are increased.
