Flagstaff, Arizona is home to two large fiberglass statues known as the Muffler Men, although the exact location of their residence has varied over the decades. Today the Muffler Men are associated with Northern Arizona University sports and the J. Lawrence Walkup Skydome. Feel free to read on if you would like to learn a little bit about the Lumberjack Muffler Man you might come across on your travels through Flagstaff, Arizona.

History of the Muffler Men

The Lumberjack Muffler Man and his brother are both property of Northern Arizona University. A local eatery called the Lumberjack Restaurant used two Muffler Men to attract business in a manner that fit the brand, but the restaurant was ultimately renamed when it was sold to new owners in the 1970s. Since the name of the establishment changed to Granny’s Closet and lumberjacks were no longer part of the theme, the restaurant donated the Muffler Men to Northern Arizona University to generate school spirit surrounding the school’s sports teams. The Muffler Men were two of many large fiberglass structures that were created using similar molds.

School Spirit

This donation made sense because Northern Arizona University’s J. Lawrence Walkup Skydome is home to the Lumberjacks. You can now find one of the Muffler Men welcoming visitors outside of the Skydome, while the other watches over the sporting events that occur inside. The Lumberjack Muffler Man inside the Skydome enjoys protection from the weather and elements, making it better able to stand up over time.
