Self-Driving Food Deliveries Debut Are on the Rise

Can you envision a car making a delivery to you, without the driver? That may be the future of food deliveries, if Ford and Postmates have anything to say about it. They are tapping into the quickly evolving world of self-driving technology to revolutionize home delivery. If their model is successful, you can be sure that Google, Uber, and other companies who are testing driverless cars won’t be soon behind. Here is what you need to know.

Self-Driving Deliveries in Miami

The Ford and Postmates project is in the testing phase with self-driving food deliveries in Miami. At this point, the cars involved in the project still have human drivers, but the goal is to test the concept to prove its viability and safety before allowing the self-driving cars to take over autonomous delivery.

There are over 70 popular Miami restaurants taking part in the project, which uses a special design of Ford’s Transit Connect vehicle that is outfitted with special compartments for the food deliveries. Customers who want to experience what the self-driving food delivery process would be like can choose to have their delivery made by a self-driving car when they make their order through Postmates.

Secure Delivery Process

What does it look like to have a car delivery food on its own? When an order is placed in a restaurant, the staff prepares the food and then uses a code to place the order in a locker in the car. The cars are outfitted with multiple lockers that can be secured with individual codes, so more than one delivery can go out at a time. When the car arrives at a customer’s home, the customer receives a text with their locker location and access code, which they can enter into a touchscreen on the car. The code prompts the right locker to open, and the customer can remove his or her food.
