What Is Inside Delivery?

The logistics industry has its own unique set of terms that you should become familiar with if you plan to open a business that requires a great deal of shipping. One of those terms is “inside delivery.” Of course, if you’re ever unsure about any terms you might come across when shipping freight you can always contact the freight carrier for assistance.

Definition of Inside Delivery

In the shipping world, a standard delivery involves taking a load from one dock to another. If the delivery must be left anywhere other than the dock, this is considered “inside delivery.” Inside delivery is typically used when a loading dock is not available. For example, when freight is shipped directly to businesses that don’t have a loading dock, the driver will place the delivery inside the threshold. Note that inside delivery is a freight accessorial. This means it’s subject to an additional fee.

Inside Delivery at Residences

It’s unusual for freight to be delivered directly to residential addresses, but it does happen sometimes. In these cases, inside delivery involves leaving the pallet on the customer’s porch or driveway. You’ll almost never hear of an LTL shipper bringing a pallet directly into a residential home. This is because of potential liability issues; the freight carrier doesn’t want to invite claims that the driver damaged or dirtied the customer’s home.
Inside Delivery at Businesses

At commercial addresses, the delivery driver will typically bring the pallet directly indoors, within a few feet of the entrance. Note that if the pallet is oversized and will not fit into the entryway, it will be left outside. Delivery drivers do not break down pallets or attempt to make an inside delivery if doing so might be unsafe for their equipment or damaging to the building.
