Weight
The most basic factor used to determine the shipping charge for an LTL shipment is its weight. The more your LTL shipment weighs, the less you will need to pay for every hundred pounds of your total shipment.
Density
The density of your LTL shipment is its total weight divided by the number of cubic feet that it takes up. This measurement will need to be added to the bill of lading.
Freight classification
The density of your shipment is used to determine the freight class it will be categorized under. There are 18 distinct categories used by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association to classify cargo, ranging from shipments that take up little space to shipment that will require a great deal of space to transport.
Distance
The distance that your cargo will need to be transported will also be factored into the shipping charges. In some cases, the shipment will need to be handed off to another LTL carrier during the transportation process.
Base rate
This is the rate charged by the LTL carrier for transporting the cargo. Generally, the base rate will be altered based on the space requirements of the shipment.
